Cappella Romana to Perform Two Nights July 26 & 27th at the 41st Annual Bach Festival at Mount Angel Abbey, St Benedict, Oregon.
Mount Angel Abbey is a very large and beautifully situated Roman Catholic Benedictine Monastery. The Monastery is located near the “Russian Orthodox Old Believer” settlements in Woodburn, Oregon. Interestingly the Monastery had a Monastic Brother- Father Ambrose (+May 1, 21012 AD) who reached out to the “Old Believers” including learning Church Slavonic, helping them transition to life in America and living his Monastic Life as an Old Believer. At one time there were even services for “Old Believers in Communion with Rome.” A fascinating anomaly if ever there was one. Our Lady of Tikhvin Center a Museum dedicated to the Old believers is located at the Abbey. It is quite interesting and informative if a bit rundown. It maintains an antipathy towards Russian Orthodoxy after the reforms (some of it well deserved), and is decidedly pro Old Believer. But it does share the traditions and customs of the Old Believers many of which come from ancient Russia. I do not know the status of the museum at this time if it is still open to the public since the demise of Fr Ambrose, when I learn more I will share it. I am planning a longer post with Links on the Old Believers. By the Prayers of St Sergius and the New Russian Martyrs may the division soon be healed.
The Main Abbey Church is a Magnificent Romanesque building and well worth a visit.
