Chanters of St Panteleimon from Tiblisi, Georgia perform May 7th in Portland

This May, Cappella Romana welcomes to Portland The Chanters of the Church of St. Panteleimon in Tbilisi, Georgia. This professional all-male quartet makes its only West Coast performance in Portland on its 2011 US Tour, singing ancient Georgian Orthodox chants with their hauntingly beautiful and vigorous three- or four-voice polyphony, and traditional Georgian folk melodies, yodels, and table songs. (One night only: Sat., May 7, 2011, 8 pm, St. Mary’s Cathedral, NE 18th and Couch. Tickets start at $22 with discounts for students, seniors, and Music for All. 503-205-0715).  They also will appear in Missoula, Mt May 1st.

If you have never heard Georgian Liturgical music the Capella Romana website has some excerpts of this amazing, haunting, and ethereal music.  It is not like Byzantine, or the Russian music most people are familiar with. ed
