“The Jewish Roots of Orthodox Christian Worship” A Talk by Fr James Bernstein

Nativity Fast A Joyous Fast to All!

“The Jewish Roots of Orthodox Christian Worship” A Talk by Fr James Bernstein co-founder of Jews for Jesus and Priest of St. Paul Orthodox Church-Brier, WA (FB).  The talk was given at “The Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration” in Ellwood City, PA..  Fr James has also written a book about his journey from Judaism to Orthodox Christianity-“Surprised by Christ” it is available by clicking the link.   Excerpt from Amazon description below:

“Raised in Queens, New York by formerly Orthodox Jewish parents whose faith had been undermined by the Holocaust, Arnold Bernstein went on his own personal quest for spiritual meaning. He was ready to accept God in whatever form He chose to reveal Himself and that form turned out to be Christ. But Bernstein soon perceived discrepancies in the various forms of Protestant belief that surrounded him, and so his quest continued — this time for the true Church. Surprised by Christ combines an engrossing memoir of one man s life in historic times and situations from the Six-Day War to the Civil Rights Movement to the Jesus Movement in Berkeley …

  1. Jewish roots in the Liturgy are undeniable, however I sometimes feel that certain “evangelical” Jewish-Christians cross the lines of what the early councils decided was a heresy called the “judiazers” and reject much of what these latter day Christian-Jews hold.

    • Greetings Art,
Thank you for your comment and for using OrthoNW. I am not very familiar with current trends in the Jews for Jesus or Messianic Jewish Congregations. But you are most probably correct in your assessment. The simple truth is they need to join the Church and be united to Christ in Baptism and the Eucharist. But it is our less than shining example of Christian living that keeps so many away. Your prayers!
