¨Trezoros¨ A Film about Greek Sephardic (Jewish) Families Under the Nazis March 11, 2018

St. Tarasius, archbishop of Constantinople (806)  A Joyous Lent to all!

The Greek-American Historical Museum of Washington State presents:

Seattle Jewish Film Festival: “Trezoros” Sephardic Spotlight

Sunday, March 11 | 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
AMC Pacific Place | 600 Pine Street Seattle, WA

About the Film

A coastal city renowned for its idyllic beauty, Kastoria was once home to a harmonious and vibrant population of Jews and Christians.

Illuminating the moving, individual stories of the Greek Sephardic families forced from their homes when Nazis took control of the town, this carefully crafted documentary serves as a tribute and reminder of the many displaced communities forced out and afflicted by Nazi occupation.

Using never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with survivors scattered across the diaspora, TREZOROS stitches together a compelling and affecting portrait of a unique and dynamic Jewish community.

The film will be followed by a discussion with Professor Devin Naar of the Stroum Center’s Sephardic Studies Program, director Lawrence Russo, and Larry Confino; then by a post-film Sephardic coffee klatsch (echar lashon) with coffee/tea and biscochos. Included in ticket price.

Learn more about the film, and purchase tickets, at the Seattle Jewish Film Festival website.

Xylouris White Presented By The Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum in Portland- March 15, 2018

St. Cyril, Equal-to-the-Apostles, teacher of the Slavs (869).  St. Raphael, bishop of Brooklyn (1915).  A Joyous Lent to all!

Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum (HACCM) (FB) presents:

¨A passion for exploration comes naturally to Xylouris White, the ruggedly visionary duo formed of Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White. For their debut album, 2014’s Goats, Xylouris White compared themselves to the titular animals, wandering fearlessly through rough-hewn terrain. Two years later, they showed how far their horizons could reach on 2016’s majestically expansive Black Peak, named after a mountain top in Crete.

Just 15 well-toured months later, the duo’s exploratory instincts drive them further onwards still on their third album, Mother, released 19th January on Bella Union, and named to denote “new life”. As Xylouris puts it, “Mother is the extension of Goats and Black Peak. Three things, all part of a whole. Goats are mothers, Zeus was raised on Amaltheia’s milk, Black Peak is Mother Earth… Mother Earth is the mother of everything.” The duo have shared a first track from the album titled “Only Love”, which is steaming HERE, while the album is available to preorder here.

Across Mother’s nine tracks, Xylouris White nurture fecund growths from the spaces between their instruments. Sometimes the songs drive with an invigorating urgency; sometimes they brood, plead, yearn and lull. The duo seem to discover each other anew at every turn, teasing the songs out from their fluid chemistry with the kind of virtuosity that knows when to listen, accommodate and learn afresh. “A theme of the album is the significance of simplicity and a child-like approach,” Xylouris explains. “So, we connect mother and child and play instruments as toys. Xylouris White is still gestating.”  (from ticketfly click to read more and order tickets)

Well better late than never.  This article was from January but I just recently learned of it.  The parishes of  St. John the Baptist fb ,  Christ the Savior fb and Holy Trinity fb came together for the  Blessing of the Waters at the Spokane River on the feast of Theophany as they do yearly. It was covered in the The Coeur d’Alene Press.

But where were the swimmers? (editor  🙂

¨WATER’S BLESSING A FRESH START

POST FALLS — The singing was heavenly as voices reflected off the water that quietly flowed past the snowy beach.

The air was crisp and fresh, stinging cheeks, noses and ears.

And the day was blessed, reinvigorating the beliefs of the faithful as they celebrated the baptism of Christ.¨

An article on St Thomas Orthodox Church Snohomish, Washington appeared in the Herald Net this past Jan 6th on this Mission parish.  Enjoy!

¨St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Snohomish observes an ancient faith

“There’s definitely a difference between this and a rock ’n’ roll church,” St. Thomas’ priest says.¨

SNOHOMISH — A business park is an unlikely place to find the home of an ancient faith. Yet to enter St. Thomas Orthodox Church, just west of Avenue D in the Bonneville Business Park, is to experience a worship space that transcends time.¨

Week of the Last Judgment. Tone three.  Maslenitsa. Meat is excluded

All of the venerable fathers, lit up with great deeds (movable holiday on Saturday of the Cheese-fare Week).  Venerable Isidore of Pelusium, monk (436-440).

St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle. (fb)

¨Dear beloved brothers and sisters of St. Demetrios,
Forgiveness is a fundamental skill of our spiritual practice.  We are instructed by Christ to forgive 70 times 7.  We pray for forgiveness “as we forgive the trespasses of others.”  However, many of us have been hurt and continue to feel burdened by the pain of that offense.  Many of us wish to be released from our resentment towards someone who has deeply hurt us.  But how?  How can we turn our negativity into compassion?  How do we know when we have truly forgiven?  Do we forgive ourselves?
In this full-day retreat and workshop (with lunch provided), we will explore the meaning of forgiveness, what it is and what it is not.  During breakout sessions, we will work through a process that will help us shift our view of ourselves, the offense, and the offender, in a helpful and health-full manner.
Please invite your everyone to attend, your non-Orthodox friends can come, too.  For reservations, please contact Pam Plumis at (206) 349-8341 by February 28.
Your sister in Christ,
Nina Varlamos

Philoptochos President¨  (From St Demetrios Announcement.)

Here is a link with a reflection on a retreat that Abbot Tryphon spoke at and some thoughts on the Salish Brotherhood.

Abbot Tryphon has a both a Blog The Morning Offering (Daily Inspiration from All-Merciful Saviour Monastery) and a daily Podcast also called The Morning Offering Podcast.  His site features daily scripture verses, a reflection, and often some lovely pictures of the Monastery or other local NW Orthodox Churches to inspire our pilgrim journey.  He has a book “The Morning Offering” which can be purchased here.  On a side note I know the Monastery could use financial support.  They receive a number of pilgrims and visitors and need to build guest quarters.

Please pray for the suffering Christians in the Middle East and throughout the world.
