Miracleworking and Myrrh-streaming Iveron  Icon of the Mother of God from Hawaii  to visit Northwest Churches!  ( This information is as complete as I currently have it.  This post may be updated as I learn of more : )

¨Dear Ones:

Christ is in our midst! Several weeks ago, I received the following message from Fr. Mark in Post Falls about the coming of the Hawaiian (Iveron) icon (https://www.orthodoxhawaii.org/icons). I have been waiting for the schedule but did not want to wait too long before informing everyone about this blessing. So here is the message:

“Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

I wanted to share some exciting news with you.  For over a year now, Khouria Malvi and I have been communicating with Fr. Nectarios, the guardian of the Wonderworking Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos.  Over this time, we have made requests for her visitation, but Father Nectarios assured us that it is she who determines the schedule.  With much prayer and due to Khouria Malvi’s diligence, glory to God, the Theotokos has heard our prayers, and Our Most Blessed Lady will be visiting our parish the weekend of August 31 to September 2nd!…”

As far as I know, she will arrive Saturday morning (August 31) and stop at Our Lady of Kazan Russian Orthodox Church in Spokane for an Akathist and Moleben for healing.
The Iveron Icon should arrive at St. John the Baptist Church in Post Falls at about 4:00pm. It sounds like there will be an Akathist before Vespers and then an anointing. She will be greeted upon Her arrival with flowers, banners, censers and clergy procession. Great Vespers at Holy Myrrhbearers is cancelled on Saturday, August 31st in order for as many of the faithful to visit and venerate the Holy Icon as possible. I hope to venerate as well even though I have a wedding at Holy Trinity Church in Spokane that afternoon/evening.
Our schedule at Holy Myrrhbearers for Sunday, September 1st remains as usual, but anyone wishing to go to St. John’s and celebrate the Liturgy in the presence of the Icon of the Theotokos is most welcome to do so. I am not certain if there is anything scheduled on Sunday afternoon, September 1st. The Icon departs for Hawaii on Monday morning, September 2nd.
OK, that is all that I know for now…stay tuned and check the websites of the various parishes as well.

And an Akathist to the Iveron Theotokos

Kontakion I

To the champion leader, our Mistress, the Theotokos, do we, thy ser-
vants, offer hymns of praise, as ones who have acquired a mighty shield,

an insuperable rampart and an ever-vigilant guardian through the arri-
val of thy precious image. As thou art possessed of invincible might, pro-
tect and defend us, O Mistress, from all enemies, visible and invisible, and

deliver us from all harm of body and soul, that we may cry out to thee:

Rejoice, O good gate-keeper, who openest the
portal of paradise unto the faithful!  (From Akathist to Iveron Icon)

A Joyous Dormition Feast to All! 2019

The Dormition of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.

A Joyful Feast of the Dormition to All!

“In giving birth, O Mother of God, thou hast retained thy virginity, and in falling asleep thou hast not forsaken the world. Thou who art the Mother of Life hast passed over into life, and by thy prayers thou dost deliver our souls from death.  Troparion

Dormition of the Theotokos Shroud  at St Nicholas in Seattle 2019. Photo from their fb page please click for more photos of the parish.

Neither the tomb nor death had power over the Theotokos who is ever watchful in her prayers and in whose intercession lies unfailing hope. For as the Mother of Life she has been transported into life by Him who dwelt within her ever virgin womb.”  Kontakion

Below is a Maronite Hymn to the Dormition.  Different than the Byzantine but, yet, oh so familiar -enjoy.  Editor

Koimisis ths Theotokou 2

Qolo: Assumption Entrance Hymn

Tune: Fsheeto

Alleluia!
O Mother who gave Life to us,
petition on our behalf
the Son who appeared from you:
may he remove from us the blows of punishment,
and keep away divisions and disputes.
May he lead us in the path of life in which we journey
at all times.
On your memorial day,
we sing praise to your only Son.Alleluia!
Blessed are you, O Mary,
for God, who feeds all creatures,
was nourished by you
and rested on your breast.
O Wonder!
The Son of God was nourished
by a human creature!
He assumed what is ours
and gave us what is his.
On his mother’s memorial let us proclaim:
Glory to you, O Lord.

Alleluia!
As dew was falling gently
over the city of Ephesus
Saint John wrote to its people.
He instructed them to celebrate
the memory of the Blessed Mary,
three times each year:
In January, during the time of planting of the seeds;
in May, during the time of harvest;
and in August, during the time of the grapes.
For the mysteries of life are prefigured in these months.

Alleluia!
On your memorial day, O Blessed Mary,
angels and mortals are overwhelmed with joy.
The dead rejoice in their tombs
because of the glory in creation.
God will bless
those who celebrate your memory with faith
and pour his mercy upon them.

Alleluia!
Who is to see a new ship
sustaining the One who is mighty;
the One who sustains and rules all creation.
Mary bore him, yet he bears all creation.
He nourishes all living creatures,
yet she nourished him with her milk.
He is the Maker of all infants,
yet he dwelt, as an infant, in her womb.
The fiery beings in the heights
sing hymns of praise to him!
Alleluia!

Holy Transfiguration 2019 A Joyous Feast to All!

The Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ (Second “Feast of the Saviour” in August).

Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, O Christ God,/ Who didst show Thy glory unto Thy disciples as far as they could bear it,/ May Thine ever-existing light shine forth also upon us sinners/ through the prayers of the Theotokos.// O Bestower of light, glory be to Thee!

Kontakion, idiomelon, in Tone VII —
On the mountain wast Thou transfigured,/ and Thy disciples beheld Thy glory as far as they could bear it, O Christ God;/ that when they would see Thee crucified,/ they would comprehend that Thy suffering was voluntary,// and proclaim to the world that Thou art of a truth the Effulgence of the Father.

Przemieniłeś się na górze Chryste Boże,
ukazując chwałę swoją Twoim uczniom, na ile ujrzeć mogli.
Niech zajaśnieje i nam grzesznym Twoja światłość Wiekuista;
przez modlitwy Bogurodzicy, Światłości dawco, chwała Tobie.

When, O Christ our God, Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, Thou didst reveal Thy glory to Thy Disciples in proportion as they could bear it. Let Thine everlasting light also enlighten us sinners, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O God Thou Bestower of light, glory to Thee.

Preobraziłsia jesi na hore, Christie Boże,

What Happens When Your Band is Breaking into the Big Time and Three Men Leave to Become Orthodox Christians and Priests? A Film About this July 22nd Portland

Thursday July 18, 2019 / July 5, 2019  5th Week after Pentecost. Tone three.

Venerable Athanasius of Mt. Athos (1003) and his six disciples.
Uncovering of the relics (1422) of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh (1392).
New Hieromartyr Gennadius priest, Martyrdom of St. Elizabeth Romanov and Nun Barbara (1918).  New Martyrs Grand Dukes Sergius Mikhailovitch, Princes John Constantinovich, Constantine, Igor Constantinovich and Vladimir.

Hat tip to  OrthodoxPortland.

What Happens When Your Band is Breaking into the Big Time and Three Men Leave to Become Orthodox Christians and Priests?  See the movie and find out….  It seems appropriate to post a conversion story on the Feast of such a great and Holy Convert St Elizabeth.

Parallel Love film premiere at Hollywood Theatre, July 22

We have the rare opportunity to attend the local premiere of The Covellite International Film Festival winning documentary, Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury, about the Indie-Christian-Punk band, Luxury, and three of it’s members who became Orthodox Christian Priests. The film director, Matt Hinton, will be at the premiere and available for Q&A.

Tickets will going on sale within the next 48 hours and available from the Hollywood Theater Website and you can also view the trailer.

You can listen to the recent NPR interview on the film here where you can also sample songs from the band’s latest album.

This premiere presents a unique and fun opportunity for the local Orthodox Christian community to turn out for an “extracurricular” activity.

Parallel Love asks a question you don’t hear very often: What happens to a rock-and-roll band when three-fifths of its members become Eastern Orthodox priests? That’s what Luxury, a band from Athens, Georgia, had to deal with after a devastating auto wreck they suffered on tour in 1995 while just on the cusp of success. Best described as The Smiths-meet-Fugazi, Luxury’s hyper-articulate musicians tell their poignant story—and play their soaring melodies on top of wild post-punk instrumentation—in this vibrant, gripping film. “I couldn’t take my eyes off it,” says Paste Magazine.

Wishing All a Joyous Feast of Saint´s Peter and Paul 2019 !

The Holy, Glorious and All-praised Leaders of the Apostles, Peter and Paul (67)

Wishing all a Joyous Feast!

“O first-enthroned of the Apostles,

Teachers of the Universe:

Entreat the Master of all

to grant peace to the world,

and great mercy to our souls.”

Troparion to SS. Peter and Paul

St. John Chrysostom: On Sts. Peter and Paul

“NOT so bright is the heaven, when the sun sends forth his rays, as is the city of Rome, sending out these two lights into all parts of the world. From thence will Paul be caught up, from thence Peter. Just bethink you, and shudder at the thought of what a sight Rome will see, when Paul arises suddenly from that deposit, together with Peter, and is lifted up to meet the Lord.  What a rose will Rome send up to Christ! What two crowns will the city have about it! What golden chains will she be girded with! What fountains possess! Therefore I admire the city, not for the much gold, not for the columns, not for the other display there, but for these pillars of the Church.”

~St. John Chrysostom (c. 349 – 407): Homilies on Romans, 32.   Found on ¨Fathers of the Church Blog.¨ a Roman Catholic blog.

Support the Oldest Orthodox Church in the Northwest!

Holy Resurrection in Tacoma is having a parish Summer work day at Holy Trinity Church in Wilkison, Washington.  Normally events that are just parish events are not published on here.  But this is the oldest parish in Washington.  And was truly a catholic parish in its ethnic make up.  It is the mother Church of the Northwest  and was even Consecrated by a Glorified Saint.  I am sure others might be interested in helping preserve and take care of this historic Church.  Would it not be a wonderful thing if Orthodox from other parishes also came to help?!  Would it be so terrible if too many people showed up wanting to preserve this treasure and be inspired by it to sharing our faith and working together?  I have not warned the secretary of Holy Resurrection parish that they may be flooded with calls to offer physical, material and financial assistance.  May they be so blessed!  (Please note this parish is featured in the Pilgrimage page, which has been updated and is fairly complete.  Check it out! Below is some more information on the Parish)–Editor

¨Wilkeson Workday
On Saturday, July 20 we will meet at our historic Holy Trinity
Temple, 431 Long Street, Wilkeson 98396 at 10:00 a.m. for a

special workday. We’ll re-roof the restroom. Please consider help-
ing with yard work, church cleaning, and other chores.¨ — From parish bulletin

Holy Trinity Parish established 1896 in Wilkinson   The parish was visited and partially founded by Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich and Consecrated by St Tikhon.  It is the oldest parish building in the Northwest and of historical and Spiritual significance to all Orthodox in the area.  A most inspiring sermon was preached there by Saint Tikhon in 1900 in which he described our first parishioners as “Arabs, Greeks and Slavs,” together with “Uniates [Byzantine Rite Catholics] who had reunited and were living in Wilkeson.” “(from the OCA website)  A more complete history of the parish can be found here on the OCA website ; and an even  more complete history here from the Holy Resurrection Parish Website .   Holy Resurrection in Tacoma is the “daughter Parish” actively outreaching to the Tacoma area.

What is Family camp?

Family camp is an Orthodox camp for the whole family. It is an opportunity to gather with other Orthodox Christians of the Northwest and pray, learn, play, and fellowship together. There are activities for everyone: for the kids of all ages, talks for the adults, and an opportunity to make new friends and renew old friendships for all: There are fun activities for children, teens, young adults, parents, and grandparents.

Where is family camp?

The Family camp is located near Eugene Oregon at a beautiful lakeside Kiwanis camp.

Why go to family camp?

The St. John the Wonderworker Family Camp offers the opportunity to retreat from the world and set aside time for prayer, fellowship, classes, and other ways of building the Faith for those who may not have the resources or time to travel to a monastery or other place of pilgrimage. World-class speakers and teachers and helpers experienced with working with children contribute to a full experience of the Church in a beautiful wilderness setting. Every day we gather together to pray Matins, Vespers, and Compline and we always have a mid-week Divine Liturgy. We also have a special children’s Vespers, where the kids get a hands-on opportunity to participate in a service.

Family camp is also a fun place for children of all ages.  Children, teens and adults will have age appropriate seminars, activities and crafts in an environment that will build their understanding of the Orthodox faith.

Pentecost, Troparion, Tone VIII —
Blessed art Thou, Christ our God, Who didst make the fishermen wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them didst draw the world into Thy net. Lover of men, glory to Thee.

Kontakion, Tone VIII —
When the Most High came down and confused the tongues, He divided the nations, but when He distributed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity. And with one accord we glorify the All-Holy Spirit.

Come, O ye peoples, / let us worship the Godhead
in three Persons: / the Son in the Father, with the
Holy Spirit; / for the Father timelessly begat the
Son, / Who is co-eternal and Co-enthroned; / and
the Holy Spirit was in the Father, glorified with
the Son; / one Might, one essence, one Godhead, /
which we all worship, saying: / Holy God, Who
didst create all things through the Son, / with the
co-operation of the Holy Spirit. / Holy Mighty,
through Whom we have known the Father, / and
through Whom the Holy Spirit came to the world.
/ Holy Immortal, the Comforting Spirit, / Who
proceedest from the Father and restest in the Son.

Vision of TLAA

The Liturgical Arts in the Orthodox Church are the product of two thousand years of liturgical worship in unbroken continuity; they serve to remove the worshiper from the earthly plain and elevate him/ her to the heavenly realm.  Because we see a loss of the Church’s traditional worship in America, we hope to implement a project that will revitalize the traditional liturgical arts in order to restore the proper power to, and transformative nature of, our worship.   Each generation must acquire the skills and knowledge of the tradition and then develop the craft in order to attain the heights of expression in these sacred arts.  The Liturgical Arts Academy (TLAA) aspires to teach leaders and church artists how to worship God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the form which has produced hundreds and thousands of saints, martyrs, confessors and witnesses.

Upcoming Icon Workshop with the NW’s own  Deacon Matthew Garrett .  Icons and more information can be found on his website- Icons by the Hand of Deacon Matthew Garrett.  He also has a blog – Holy Icons an Iconographer’s Blog.  And if you like Icon Cards for name days etc., his zazzle site.

From a Previous Post:  The Idaho Statesman had a front page article on Nov 5, 2011 about the Northwest’s own Boise Iconographer Deacon Matthew Garrett entitled; “Faces of faith: Orthodox Christian iconographer in Boise is part of an ancient tradition.”  More of his work can be seen by visiting his website Holy Icons, and his blog-Holy Icons an Iconographers blog.  He also just published a book “Sanctify those Who Love the Beauty of Thy House” image on the right.  “More than a Piece of Art” is another article on Mr. Garrett and his Iconography that was done for a Church in West Virginia by the  Register Herald in Beckley, WV.
